Surprisingly, those who felt notifications were most useful were also the most affected by the resulting stress of constantly being notified about something new. And its not just an issue at workâ€"we take the stress of needing to manage notifications home with us. The researchers found that push notifications for email are linked to perceived email pressure, which in turn was linked to work stress affecting the home lives of participants. This consequence was itself linked to a compromised home life affecting work performance, making the whole situation a vicious cycle. And all because those participants received a notification every time they had a new email. Whod have thought managing notifications could be so damaging? The study found those who succumbed to telepressure were more likely to be sleep deprived, to take sick days, and to be burnt-out. The researchers also said, however, that telepressure is a workplace problem. Its a behavior we learn from our colleagues or pick up from the social culture in our workplace. So this is one area where employers need to take the lead in changing how we think aboutâ€"and react toâ€"needing to manage notifications, both at work and after hours. While going cold turkey is not necessarily a great method for cutting down on notifications of any kind, one study found reducing the time we spend with email can be beneficial to our wellbeing. The study split 124 workers into two groups. Each group spent one week with no restrictions on email notifications or checking their inboxes, while the other group spent the week with no notifications for email, and only three inbox checks allowed per day. Then the groups swapped to the opposite condition. Despite the fact that most of the participants found it hard to not check their email when in the restricted condition, the study found that limiting the number of times people checked their email per day lowered overall day-to-day stress. So cutting back could be simply a matter of setting aside time to check your inbox, and turning off notifications outside that time period. All the others were confederates who were instructed to give inaccurate answers on a number of trials. Asch was amazed to find that most of the subjects conformed to the majority at least once and the rest of them conformed on more than 6 of the 12 trials. A File Virus is the most common kind of virus. These kinds of viruses usually infect .EXE and .COM files, which are the main component of a program or application. A file virus can insert its own code into part of the file, so that when the infected program file is run, the virus is executed first. Most file viruses are memory resident. Because of this, they can easily attach themselves to other programs that are being run and start to infect that file. A simple virus will overwrite and destroy a host file, immediately letting the user know that there is a problem because the software will not run. Because these viruses are immediately sensed by the computer, they have a less chance to spread. More complex written viruses will cause more damage, spread easier, and are harder to be detected. Boot sector viruses infect hard drives and floppy disks by putting itself on the boot sector of the disk, which has the code that is run at boot up. Booting up from an infected floppy, allows the virus to jump from the floppy to the hard drive. These viruses are loaded first, and gain control of the system before MS-DOS could be loaded. Since the virus is run before the operating system, it is not MS-DOS-specific and can infect any PC operating system. These viruses stay in the RAM and infects every disk that is read by the computer until the computer is rebooted. After reboot the virus is removed from memory. Multi-Partite Viruses are the worse of both file and boot sector viruses. They can infect the host software components. These viruses spread like a file virus, but still insert itself into a boot sector or partition table. Because of this, they are difficult to remove. An example of this type of virus is the Tequila virus. Trojan Horses are the worst kind of viruses that exist. They contain malicious code that is meant to damage your computer. Unlike other viruses, this virus does not replicate itself. This virus waits until the trigger event. When the trigger event occurs, a message is displayed or files are damaged. Because of the nature of these viruses, there are some researchers that do not classify Trojan Horses as viruses. File Overwriters are viruses that link themselves to a program, leaving the original code intact and adding themselves over and over to as many files as possible. These viruses are made simply to keep copying itself. While, this virus is copying itself it is taking up more disk space and slowing down performance. Could geography, with all its historical and contemporary importance, withstand an academic hit like it took at Harvard? What Happened At Harvard? Several key figures emerge in this debate. The first was President James Conant. He was a physical scientist, used to the rigorous nature of research and the employment of a distinct scientific methodology, something which geography was accused of lacking at that time. His charge as the president was to guide the university through the financially lean times in the post-World War II years. The second key figure is Derwent Whittlesey, the chair of the geography department. Whittlesey was a human geographer, for which he was heavily criticized. Physical scientists at Harvard, including many geographers and geologists, felt that human geography was unscientific, lacked rigor, and was not deserving of a place at Harvard. Whittlesey also had a sexual preference which was not as widely accepted in 1948. He hired his live-in partner, Harold Kemp, as a geography lecturer for the department. Kemp was considered by many a mediocre scholar which lent support to geographys critics. Alexander Hamilton Rice, another figure in the Harvard geography affair, founded the Institute for Geographical Exploration at the university. He was considered by many to be a charlatan and would often leave on an expedition while he was supposed to be teaching classes. This made him an annoyance to President Conant and the Harvard administration and did not help geographys reputation. Also, prior to founding the institute, Rice and his wealthy wife tried buying the presidency of the American Geographical Society, contingent on Isaiah Bowman, chair of the geography department at Johns Hopkins University, being removed from the position. Ultimately the plan did not work but the incident did create tension between Rice and Bowman. Isaiah Bowman was a graduate of the geography program at Harvard and was a promoter of geography, just not at his alma mater. Years earlier, a work of Bowmans had been rejected by Whittlesey for use as a geography textbook. The rejection led to an exchange of letters which strained relations between them. Bowman was also described as puritanical and it is supposed that he did not like Whittleseys sexual preference. He also did not like Whittleseys partner, a mediocre scholar, being associated with his alma mater. As a distinguished alumnus, Bowman was part of the committee to evaluate geography at Harvard. It is widely considered that his actions on the geography evaluation committee effectively ended the department at Harvard. Geographer Neil Smith wrote in 1987 that Bowmans silence condemned Harvard Geography and later, when he tried to resuscitate it, his words put nails in the coffin. The team was left to their own devices and formulated a plan off the scant details given to them, focusing on the development of Worldwide Client Service, not brand stewardship application. Beyond Beers need to communicate directions to her development team, she never described to them the importance of why. It is extremely difficult to determine how to do something when you do not clearly understand why these  actions are taking place. The vision of brand stewardship was developed, and Beers talked about what that could mean to clients, taking the time to break that vision down for them to see for themselves, but unfortunately that never happened with management. Particularly since Beers left her team to develop the â€Å"Chewton Glen Declaration,† with little direction, the why could have helped to steer them on a clearer path. Beers decision to implement the Worldwide Client Service before establishing a clear action plan for her staff was one that only generated more confusion. The application of this new branch became a communicative distraction for employees, denying them the time to embrace and comprehend brand stewardship, and instead throwing several complicated applications with little instruction. All that this behavior led to was a collective decision to regroup, reorganize and attempt again to clearly define who and what Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide are. PART 2: One of the most important aspects of proper communication of brand stewardship and recent changes at Ogilvy & Mather will be communication channels. Ensuring that all the audiences both internally and externally are getting a clear and strategic message will aid in the execution of a successful message and application. Listed below is an encompassing view of who those sources, resources and clients are who need a clear view of Brand Stewardship and what it means. Of the six audience segments outlined above, the three I would identify as top priorities would be Clients, Core Disciplines and Worldwide Services. Clients would be one of the top priorities for Ogilvy & Mather because the need to understand the concept of Brand Stewardship to invest in it, without their support of the idea the concept would be defunct. The main objects of this communication strategy would be to first and foremost for them to fully grasp the idea of Brand Stewardship and how it can work for their company. This is integral because it is not only about understanding, but it’s also about knowing the benefits of this service and what it can do for their company. With the know, I would also want them to understand how Ogilvy & Mather will go about acting out these benefits through strategy and thoughtful planning. The Core Disciplines play an extremely important role in the Brand Stewardship plan, as they are the individuals who will be executing the idea. This group would be a priority because if they do not understand the concept then neither will the client because they are the communicators, they provide the examples and final product of what Brand Stewardship really is. The main communicative object for the Core Disciplines would be for them to be able to clearly and concisely define what Brand Stewardship is. If they are able to explain exactly what the message and concept is, then they  will have completed the first step to proper execution. I would also like them to understand who their resources are, and what tools are available to them, such as manuals and other individuals in their position at other offices. This would be an opportunity for collaboration and brand integration for Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. Lastly, I would prioritize Worldwide Services as they are the touchstone for all branches of Ogilvy & Mather. The Worldwide Services division is extremely important because they represent consistency throughout the company. One of biggest concerns within the company was fiscal equality and compensation and by knowing what Brand Stewardship is and how it’s implemented, then they can offer financial compensation equal to the work load. Also, this division is the source of communicative messaging company wide, in a way they are the stewards of the Ogilvy & Mather brand. It would important that the Worldwide Services can translate Brand Stewardship both financial, and as a resource for all branches worldwide. They represent the home base, and it will be important that they can offer knowledge and aid to all the companies that need help with Brand Stewardship. Part 3: Assess Beers’ strengths and weaknesses as a leader and communicator based on what you read in the case. What advice would you give her — in terms of her own communication style and involvement — as she prepares to relaunch the strategic change initiative? (33%) Throughout the analysis of Charlotte Beers at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide case study, we can see many examples of her strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Beers is a visionary who is able to take an existing company with a strong corporate identity, tarnished by inappropriate leadership and breathe new life into who they are. Her strengths lie with her ability to create and sell. Not only could she envision the idea of Brand Stewardship, but she could also make clients she it with little to no resources. Charlotte Beers also had a strong grasp upon branding, and what that means for the success of a company. She knew that to have her new employees buy into her and her vision, she had to get everyone on the same page. She  worked hard at gathering people together to create a common goal, which succeeded at several times, it was her execution that weakened her vision. Where Beers lacked was the ability to turn her ideas into actual successes through planning and strategic communication.
